The 1982 World's Fair, known as the Knoxville International Energy Exposition, took place from May 1 to October 31, 1982. The fairgrounds, spanning 70 acres, were constructed on the old Louisville and Nashville railyard and depot, with part of the University of Tennessee's campus also utilized. Despite its success, the World's Fair did not fulfill the growth expectations of organizers and local officials. The subsequent exposition in New Orleans, two years later, did not fare as well.
