Promenade en Bateau, a Neo-impressionist masterpiece, is the work of Maximilien Luce, a French artist famed for his paintings, illustrations, and graphic art, as well as his anarchist beliefs. Luce's artistic journey began in 1876 when he became a qualified engraver, later moving to London with his employer. Upon returning to France in 1879, he balanced military service with studying painting under Carolus Duran, guided by Camille Pissarro. Pissarro introduced Luce to Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, leading to his role as a founder of the Neo-Impressionist School, or Pointillists. Luce adhered to the Divisionist technique, but unlike Seurat, he imbued his work with passion, often depicting the struggles of everyday people. After 1920, Luce's style became freer. He served as President of the Society of Independent Artists from 1935 until 1940, when he resigned in protest against racial laws. Today, Maximilien Luce is celebrated as a significant figure in French Post-Impressionist Art, recognized for his Pointillist style and social realism.
